In the era of digital transformation and automation, AGV self-propelled vehicles have affirmed their role as the golden key to help businesses improve productivity, optimize transportation processes and minimize operational risks. With modern technology, diverse designs and applications in many industries, AGV self-propelled vehicle models are more suitable and necessary than ever to meet the increasingly fierce competition of the global market.
What is AGV?
AGV is a type of self-driving robot that uses many advanced technologies to move and perform transportation tasks in warehouses or distribution centers. Based on the operating principle, the important elements of AGV include the positioning system, safety system, electrical system, motion system and vehicle controller.
These technologies work together to ensure that autonomous vehicles can navigate the complex spaces of warehouses and factories with precision, safety and efficiency. This results in faster and more reliable handling of goods, which in turn helps businesses stay competitive.
Popular Types of AGVs in Automated Warehouses
Forklift AGV
Latent Mobile Robot
CMR
AGV Tow Truck
Forklift AGV: designed to perform the same functions as a conventional forklift but without the need for an operator. AGV forklifts are equipped with forks to lift and place goods at different heights. This type of vehicle is widely used in warehouses and manufacturing facilities, performing tasks such as stacking pallets, retrieving goods from shelves, and loading/unloading.
LMR – Latent Mobile Robot: With a flat and flexible design, the LMR robot can crawl under pallets, racks or platforms to lift and move them accurately and quickly. This is the optimal choice for factories, warehouses and distribution systems that need to optimize operating processes.
CMR – Conveyor Mobile Robot: The CMR AGV conveyor robot is a conveyor robot. Thanks to its high customizability, it can meet a variety of automation requirements in the industry.
Towing AGV – Self-Propelled Towing Vehicle AGV: specialized in pulling carts, trailers or wheeled equipment automatically, operating like a transport train.
How AGVs Work In Smart Warehouses
During operation, AGVs receive commands from the central management system, accurately locate their location, determine their route, avoid obstacles, lift loads and move along a pre-calculated route. Sensors, positioning technology and safety mechanisms will continuously monitor to help minimize the risk of collision or route deviation.
Positioning System – The Core of Autonomous Navigation
- Laser system : Uses laser sensors to scan space, determine location and map the environment in real time. This technology helps the vehicle operate accurately in complex, obstacle-filled environments.
- Magnetic Strips and Wire Sensors : Use magnetic strips or guidance sensors to position the vehicle within pre-programmed routes. This method is suitable for fixed, less variable operating patterns.
- GPS and global positioning systems : Often used in outdoor environments or places where precise location determination is required over a large area. However, this technology is not suitable for use in warehouses due to signal limitations.
Safety System – Ensures absolute safety of operation
The ultrasonic sensor system and camera are also integrated to recognize mobile or static objects, helping the robot to be autonomous in avoiding collisions and moving safely in complex environments.
Vehicle motion and control systems
The motor systems (usually electric motors) coordinate with the wheels, transmissions and hydraulic mechanisms if the load needs to be lifted. The logic controller, usually a PLC or integrated control software, transfers commands from the central or warehouse management software to the mechanical components for execution.
The control program helps the self-driving vehicle perform tasks such as: following the designated route, stopping, parking or lifting and unloading according to the pre-programmed procedure. Throughout the entire process, the warehouse management software (WMS) plays a central role, continuously coordinating to optimize each step of transportation.
